Documentary Voice Over in Hindi and English

Documentary narration in Hindi and English by Gulab Hussain, with long-form experience on news-channel specials and heritage films.

Documentary narration is a test of patience. The pace has to stay steady, the pauses have to fall where the picture breathes, and the tone has to let the story lead. Gulab Hussain has narrated long-form specials and heritage films for television and institutions in Hindi and English.

The documentary voice

The documentary sample on the demos page shows the register: deep, cinematic and unhurried, with weight on the right words and no performance for its own sake. For a wildlife film the voice is wider and gentler, for a history film it is firmer and more measured, and for a social-issue film it stays controlled so the facts carry the emotion.

Subjects he narrates

  • History, culture, heritage and travel.
  • Wildlife, nature and science.
  • Social-issue and awareness films, including government and CSR work.
  • Corporate and institutional documentaries and founder stories.

Working to picture

Send the picture lock, or the timecodes with the script, and the narration will be paced to the cut. If the edit is still moving, record a guide track first and final narration after lock. Gulab can also advise when a line is too long for the shot it covers.

How long-form narration is managed

A documentary read is not recorded in one sitting. Gulab splits the script into sections of a few minutes, records each in a consistent session environment, and keeps a running pronunciation log of names, places and technical terms so that minute 3 and minute 43 sound like one voice. After each section he listens back for continuity before moving on.

Script and timing advice

  • Narration reads best at a slower pace than speech in the film. Roughly 140 words a minute in Hindi and 150 in English is a safe planning figure, and less over music.
  • Leave pauses in the script, not just in the edit. Ellipses and paragraph breaks tell the narrator where the picture speaks.
  • Send reference clips of documentaries whose pace you like. Style is easier to match than to describe.

Deliverables

Section-by-section WAV files, a continuous master on request, and the pronunciation log for your records. If the edit changes after recording, only the affected lines need re-recording.
